Longer at Lands’ End

July 10, 2008

I recently wrote on this blog that Lands End “Tall” pants were not very long.  I was mistaken.  A Lands’ End representative responded with the comment that pants can be hemmed free of charge up to 36” and you can get customer crafted demin and chinos with inseams up to 40”. See her full comment under my 7/3/08 blog about Lands’ End swimwear.   At 40”, I can wear as high a heel as I want – awesome.

Long swimwear at Landsend

July 3, 2008

July 4th weekend is coming up and the beaches will be packed.  Landsend offer long lengths.  The challenge for tall females is to find a proper fitting bathing suit for long torsos.  Landsend’s suits for long torsos are 1.5 inches longer in the body than its standard cut.   Unfortunately their Tall pants are not long enough.  A Tall size 10, has a 29″ inseam, falling several inches shorter than other Tall brands.

Landsend gets a B+, since few other online sites off swimwear for long torsos.  Check them out at: www.landsend.com

A for Akris

July 2, 2008

Akris is a European design label that offer long, chic clothing.  I don’t have any of their clothes yet, but what I’ve tried on are LONG.  The clothes are available at major retail stores, or online at Nordstrom or Bergdorf Goodman.

Check out the 2008 Fall Collection at: http://www.style.com/fashionshows/collections/F2008RTW/review/AKRIS

Max Length at MaxMara

July 2, 2008

Maximum $$$ for MaxMara.  Similiar to several other Designer Labels I’ve written about, MaxMara offers classic, expensive clothes that are proportioned to fit the tall female.  The pants come un-hemmed and have approximately 38″-39″ inseam.  The cost of dresses run about $600, coat from $1,500 – $2,000.   MaxMara does not have its own website but you can visit one of their stores, buy their clothes at the better retail stores, or go online and purchase items at Nordstrom.  Check out MaxMara 2008 Fall Collection.  Learn more about MaxMara: http://nymag.com/listings/stores/maxmara01

In Theory… Tall is beautiful

June 28, 2008

That’s right, in Theory, Tall is Beautiful.  In reality, being tall can sometime be a major headache–especially when shopping.  Theory, the clothing design label offered in most of the top NY stores, takes away the headache.  They don’t offer “Long” sizes, but most of the pants will fit someone who is 5′10″ or 5′11″ (that leaves me out, unless the pants have cuffs–which they sometimes have).

Theory’s web site is interesting.  You cannot buy from them directly online, although its clothes may be available at other online retailers.  At the Theory site you can see how the clothes look together with a drag and drop feature.  There is also a blog with such catagories as fashion, music, culture, green, lifestyle, design and media.  Check Theory out at:  www.theory.com

Jeans for tall womenkind

June 27, 2008

There is a site I found call Zafu that provides a list of recommended jeans based on answers to a fit survey.  The survey asks such questions as whether you need “long length” and style: glam, classic, goth, etc.  One of the recommendations the site provided for me is 7 for all mankind.   I haven’t tried these jeans yet, but I’ve read about them being long several times.  Try them out and let us know what you think.  Go to: www.7forallmankind.com and www.zafu.com

Elegant = Elie Tahari

June 26, 2008

Elie Tahari offers elegant, classic designs for the younger professional woman.  The clothes run longer than standard designs.  Although  if you are taller than 5′10″, the pant lengths probably won’t be long enough.  Try it out, you may be lucky.  Go to www.elietahari.com.  You can also find Elie Tahari at Bloomindale’s NYC.

A Secret Worth Shouting

June 24, 2008

Victoria Secret has become of phenomenon over the past few decades because it markets fun, comfortable and affordable clothes for real females.  The bras fit correctly, especially after a fitter has identified the right size, panties don’t give wedgies and pants are long enough.  Victoria Secret sells long pant lengths with up to 36” inseam through the catalog and online.  The pants are stylish and affordable.  There are many styles to choose from, all with model name, such as Kate Fit, Marissa Fit, etc.   Business suits are also available with pant length up to 34”.

Spread the secret and try them out at:  www.victoriasecret.com.

Eddie Bauer

June 24, 2008

Eddie Bauer offers comfortable causal clothes in long sizes.   The jeans come in 34.5” – 35” inseam.  They are fashionable enough for weekend chores around the house, yard or supermarket.   My daughters tell me, the jeans are not quite chic enough for an afternoon stroll in SOHO, or shopping in one of the major department stores.    Eddie Bauer’s flannel PJ’s are some of the softest I’ve found.  I also have two of their winter coats and fleece jackets.  While I don’t have any, I’ve heard that their jogging suits are worth trying.

The only items I don’t like are their business suits.  The length on the slacks and jacket sleeves come long enough, however, I don’t like the Gabardine fabric.

Tall sizes are only available through the catalog or internet.  Give Eddie Bauer a try at: www.eddiebauer.com.

Filling in the Gap…

June 24, 2008

That’s right, the GAP has started selling “X-Long Tall” pants for tall women, exclusively online. The pants, which come in all of their denim, khaki, trouser, and slacks styles, have 36 inch inseams and run from size 2 to 16. What’s best is that they feature the season’s current styles, and are quite affordable. www.gap.com

Hardtail, hard to resist…

June 17, 2008

Hardtail, the California-based, fashionable sportswear company, is well-known for its long inseam sweat pants. Their classic stretch-sweatpant design has a “roll” top, which folds at the waistband to accommodate any leg-length. In jeans, I need a 37-inch inseam, and Hardtail sweats fit me perfectly! They’re the perfect pants for a yoga class at the gym, a shopping day with the girls, or dashing around doing errands. The line is available at Bloomingdales.  Pants prices range from $40-$60, and come in a variety of colors. www.hardtailforever.com

Zara

June 14, 2008

Zara is a clothing store from Spain that offers stylish but reasonably-priced clothes.  It has several stores in New York City and keeps inventory levels low so that new styles can be brought in on a regular basis.  While Zara does not specifically offer tall sizes, the pant lengths tend to run long.

I have to run.   I’m going to Zara for a weekend outfit.

Ellen Tracy Classic Styles

June 13, 2008

I have a closet of Ellen Tracy suits for work.  The designer doesn’t carry a tall line, but the cuts and hemlines favor tall females.  There is always at least an 1 1/4 hemline that can be taken down on the pants and arm sleeves, and the jackets have a long cut.    The line is available at all the major department stores.  The actual styles and colors may differ in each store based on the buyer, geographic area and store environment.  Since I live in NYC, I tend to shop at Bloomingdales which carries the Ellen Tracy line.

If you want basic pieces, remember Ellen Tracy:  www.ellentracy.com

Anthropologie gets A+

June 11, 2008

Anthropologie, the clothing retailer owned by “Urban Outfitters, Inc.” offers stylish, “high-end casual clothing.” The brand appeals to a wide demographic of women, offering affordably priced “unique” pieces; “bohemian,” “embroidered,” and “embellished” outfits that are suitable for work, shopping, errands, and lounging. The styles are modestly tailored, and are popular among teenagers and women through their thirties. Like Urban, Anthropologie, or “Anthro” as it is often referred to, sells pieces from several dozen brand, and often features up-and-comers. What’s more, is that Anthro now offers “Tall” sizes online, offering several pant cuts that have 36.5 inch inseams. The pants are available in several cuts and fabrics, and start at $88.   Check it out at:  www.anthropologie.com

Go Swimming with Speedo

June 10, 2008

Wow! It has been over 90 degrees these past few days in New York.  When it gets that hot, all you want to do is get into some refreshing pool, or even better a mountain lake.

Buying a bathing suit is every female’s worst nightmare.  It is even worse when you have a long torso.  The two-piece suits are not properly proportioned and the one-piece suits tug, tug, tug.   Luckly many of the Speedo suits run long.  Try them out: www.speedo.com

I’m off to find a pool.

“LL” in Alloy = Long Lengths

June 8, 2008

Alloy http://store.alloy.com/  is a clothing catalog for Teens.  It saved us when my daughters were growing up.  Denims start at $29.50 and have inseams from 30” to 37”.  Most importantly, the clothing is hip!!!   It offers the latest styles, affordable prices and sizes for all body types from petite to tall to extended sizes.

Alloy has gone beyond clothing.  It has an Alloy community where young girls can get together and blog on entertainment, style, life, guys, guizzes, astrology, literature, life, etc.  There is also a section where you can win prizes (http://www.alloy.com/archive/1/7/).  Like a Hannah Montana electric guitar.

Have fun girls.

Long Elegant Legs

June 7, 2008

There are lots of catalogs specifically for Tall Woman.  To-date, I have not found any that offer design-quality styles, fabrics or cuts.  One catalog, however, does stand out for basic stylish clothes is Long Elegant Legs (http://www.tallwomensclothes.com/).

On their website the report they offer “fashionable clothing for the woman graced with height; with pant designs featuring inseams of 36″ and 39″, and tops perfectly
proportioned to fit your longer torso, not just your sleeve length.”  – I like the graced with height part.

I have 36” and 39” jeans (for tall heels), as well as a jean jacket, jogging clothes and pajamas.  Basic denim, cotton and flannel work.  Years ago I tried the pants suites and blouses and was disappointed with the polyester look.   The pant suit they currently offer comes with lower rise pant has 36″ inseam and back flap pockets — 63% poly/34% rayon/ 3% spandex in Khaki and Navy. http://www.tallwomensclothes.com/product/1063/9

Definitely try out the more casual clothing and share you comments with us.  Especially if you try the suits, skirts and blouses.

Rock and Republic

June 4, 2008

Let’s Rock!!!

It’s time to rock with Rock and Republic (rockandrepublic.com/).  As they say on their website, they have a “luxe, yet edgy approach to fashion….  Furthing the company as a true lifestyle brand, Rock and Republic is using its momentum in fashion to influence the world of sports and philantrophy”.  They are involved in Rock Racing and Rock the Cure for cancer research.

Rock and Republic is one of the most progressive labels.  In their fashion shows they are not afraid to use the latest cutting edge technology.  For their Spring 2008 show they asked the lighting designer to make the eyes bleed of the attendees. “It was a 22 minute visual assault to match a cutting edge line of clothing.”  Learn more: http://www.rentalandstaging.com/articles/publish/article_1139.shtml
